Strathisla Distillery, Scotland's most photographed whisky distillery, stands as an iconic Speyside landmark with its twin pagoda roofs and water wheel—quintessential signatures of Scotch heritage. Acquired by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard) in 1950, it has become the spiritual home and principal malt foundation for Chivas Regal, the world's third-largest blended Scotch brand. A £2 million 2018 renovation modernized the visitor experience, introducing an experimental blending lab where guests craft personal blends. The production process remains traditional: a 5.12-ton copper-lidded mash tun feeds seven Oregon pine and three larch washbacks for 54-hour fermentations, while the compact stillhouse contains a lantern-shaped wash still with descending lyne arm and a spirit still with boiling ball and ascending lyne arm, creating a rich, fruity new make. Roughly 90% of spirit is tankered to Glen Keith for maturation, fueling Chivas Regal's 67% sales growth to 5.4 million cases in 2018. The core expression is Strathisla 12 Year Old, complemented by the Distillery Reserve Collection's 13-16 year cask-strength bottlings, available exclusively at Pernod Ricard distillery shops.

🥃 Blimey, this is a proper oddball. Typical young fruity Speysidr first, apples pop up right off the bat, then that raw maltiness and grains kick in, a little peppery zing, a touch of ginger, touches of coffee too. It’s rather sherried but still has that barley water freshness, plus a chalky side I swear I taste a hint of Muscadet? Refill hogshead cask so it’s super pale, like very pale white wine, exactly that vibe of very young malt whiskies, full of orchard fruits all the way. Distillate is fine, just kind of immature, very young, totally opposite of the usual Strathislas I’m used to. Finish is rather long, Mother Nature!

Just had a refil from the hogshead and it's a bit peppery down the back, feels kind of immature – the grains are still shouting. There's a load of orchard fruit, almost apple‑pear, and a hint of sherry that makes it a little sweet. The chalky side shows up in the finish and you can catch a faint coffee note. It's very young, so the distillate feels fine but not polished yet. Mother Nature really had a say in this one 🍏☕️

Just poured this one and wow, it's like biting into a crisp apple straight from the tree – that's what hits first. The nose is full of orchard fruits, proper sweet and fruity, with this raw maltiness underneath that reminds me of barley water left out in the sun. There's a little peppery kick too, wakes the mouth up a treat. On the tongue it's rather sherried but not heavy, more like a very pale white wine that's been left sitting in a refill hogshead for a few years. The distillate is fine though, clean and sharp. Typical young fruity Speysider, but kind of immature in a good way – like it's still finding its feet. The finish is rather long, lingering with touches of coffee and this chalky side that's a bit drying. Opposite of the usual Strathislas, this feels more vibrant, awake. Mother Nature! must've had a hand in this – it's almost got that Muscadet from last year freshness to it. Vive la Nature! indeed. Douglas Laing-style, but don't quote me on that – just what it brings to mind. Akin to these very young malt whiskies that burst with grains and orchard brightness. Honestly, not bad at all. Just needs a tad more time to grow into itself. 🍏

Just had a sip of this one. Very pale, like a light white wine or Muscadet. It's young, really young, almost immature with that raw maltiness and barley water feel. Sweet and fruity, full of orchard fruits – apples and pears. A little peppery and ginger kick, with touches of coffee. The distillate is fine, but it's got a rather long finish. There's a chalky side and grains come through too. Feels like a typical young Speysider, bursting with life from Mother Nature! 🍎

Pours like a very pale white wine, quite Muscadet-like. On the nose it’s apples first, all full of orchard fruits and that typical young fruity Speysider character. Kind of immature but the distillate is fine, you can tell. There’s a raw maltiness and barley water note, maybe a little peppery on the tongue with some ginger coming through. Touches of coffee and a chalky side? Interesting. Not too heavy though, sweet and fruity overall. Rather sherried influence in there I think. The finish is rather long for such a young malt, which is a nice surprise. Reminds me of running through orchards with Mother Nature! 🍎
